A-LIST Asks Alexis Chaffe
Alexis Chaffe is the lady behind the incredible Top Billing styling. We asked her a few questions about what she does, how to wear what and just about fashion in general.
How did you become a fashion editor?
Fashion is not an easy industry to get into; it takes great dedication to earn yourself a place within this very tight-knit community. I started as a free-lance stylist; working on all kinds of jobs from local supplements to international music videos, but could no longer deny the yearning – I had to work for a magazine. Luckily, I heard that a position had opened at Top Billing…and one rather nervous interview later and the rest is history. I was in the right place, at the right time, in the right outfit.
What are the three things you can’t live without?
Denim, Heels and Mascara.
Describe your style in 5 words.
Classics with an unpredictable twist.
What is your most embarrassing fashion moment ever?
White sateen flared trousers with a big black zip up the front!
Which 3 people would you love meet? Past or present.
Nina Garcia, Sienna Miller and Sarah Jessica Parker
What is your motto in life?
Rather be looked over, than over-looked.
What is your favourite trend at the moment?
Fringing, I’m mad about anything with a swinging tassel.
Describe the South African fashion industry in 5 words.
Transitional, unique, eclectic, colourful and spirited
What is your favourite destination? Local and abroad.
Locally Cape Town (my adopted home) and abroad Thailand. Bargain shopping, a strong cultural heritage and gorgeous beaches…how can you not love that?
What tips can you give new stylists in the fashion industry?
It’s not always about your own personal style; sometimes you need to think beyond yourself, and venture into new style-territory. Stylists need to be team players… remember a successful team, makes a successful shoot. Always honour your commitments, business owners deserve their clothes back on time and in good condition, work with the industry, not against it.
What are your 3 fashion rules that you swear by?
1) Never, ever, wear something you feel ‘uneasy’ or less than confident in.
2) Don’t mix bright pinks and red (I don’t care what they’re colour-blocking this season, it just looks wrong)
3) If it doesn’t have a ‘fly-front’, then it is not a trouser – do not wear cropped tops with leggings, seriously people, it’s gross.
What is your most prized designer possession?
A vintage emerald green Gucci purse that was my mom’s.
What do you love about A-LIST?
Their steadfast reliability in bringing their customers the latest trends; if it’s ‘in fashion’ its in A-LIST.
